Pregnancy and Chiropractic (not just about back pain)
As your pregnancy advances, you are likely to experience some “discomfort”. Back pain is a common complaint among pregnant women, about 50%% experience some back pain during this time. What causes pain during pregnancy? There are a number of reasons you may ache.
Extra weight (good for growing a baby, but not so good for your back).
Center of Gravity changes (shift forward which changes your posture and muscles must compensate for these changes).
A hormone (Relaxin) causes ligaments to loosen and joints so change to accommodate the growing baby and prepare for the birth.
Changes in your body may be exacerbating and existing condition.
What can you do to help sustain you through this time of change?
Pay attention to your posture (while standing, sitting, lifting and lying.)
Change what you are wearing. (Supportive low heeled shoes, maternity pants with support for your belly, there are even support belts designed just for pregnancy.) Let go of the high heels for a while.
Stay fit, during pregnancy is not the time to start a vigorous fitness routine, but it is also not the time to just “sit back and get out of shape”. Staying strong, flexible and active not only helps with staying health, but you bounce back more easily and helps reduce the amount of back pain you may experience.
Keep your spine as healthy as you can; Chiropractic care can be beneficial at every stage of pregnancy before, during and after. Chiropractic care helps to restore balance to your spine and pelvis which can lead to safer and easier pregnancy and delivery for both you and your baby. Published studies have indicated that chiropractic care during pregnancy has been shown to reduce labor time and pain associated with delivery.
There are even specific Chiropractic Techniques associated with pregnancy that can allow for the baby to move to the proper presentation in preparation for birth avoiding more risky interventions.
